ever since she was little

Mini-Teen has wanted to be a marine biologistwhen she was really little she described it as "turtle hunting" not in the search for the main ingredient of turtle soup you understand. . . now she is a little more sophisticated: making GCSE exam choices, - all other subjects planned around the crucial triple science option*; she is a qualified SCUBA diver, thanks to her rather wonderful holidays with her father; she has a keen but rather nerdy interest in any Discovery Channel programmes narrated by David Attenborough, we're currently watching repeats of various brilliant BBC series, including Oceans and Blue Planet. . .
*the only reason I ended up reading Speech Sciences at Uni was because I couldn't read Marine Biology and Marine Physics as I hadn't taken Physics 'O'-Level; not that Mini-Teen is a chip off the old block in any way shape or form - it's just one of life's strange coincidences
but when she announced that she wanted to go to the London Aquarium my heart sankwe went as a family many years ago and it was a truly gruesome experience; I knew that X would have no desire whatsoever to go with a couple of thirteen year-old girls, especially on a weekend when the rugby was on tv; I knew I'd end up taking MT and her friend; I just hadn't anticipated just how utterly awful it would still be

it is interesting seeing these amazing creatures close up - I have to admit - but, honestly, who on earth thinks that it's a good idea to set the whole thing up in what can only be described as an underground carpark with water tanks? who on earth thinks that it's a suitable attraction for families with screaming babies and wandering toddlers? and WHO ON EARTH thinks that sharks, turtles, dog fish, rays, octopus, to name but a few, deserve to live in such a false and unnatural environment, effectively a total deadzone of a habit but the fish, for our amusement/entertainment/education/whatever?
having watched life within the oceans on tv this week, I felt sick to the core to see these magnificent creatures in an aquarium

erm, so, ok, rant over

Like zoos and circuses, they are still prisons.
But kudos to MT for knowing what she wants.

i know.

my hubby's daughter is a big science geek... so we took her on a field trip to the aquarium of the pacific. (everybody RAVES about it. i'd never been. never wanted to go)

they loved it. i didn't. it's a big buncha fishbowls in a big fish hangar, sotospeak.

so yeah. i agree....

I had a good time at Sea World once upon a time.

And then I think something happened to my brain. Maybe it was a good 'something'.

I wondered how on earth we could justify imprisoning creatures and teaching them to jump and splash for our amusement. Now--they'll have you know a majority of them were rescued critters.
Personally, I think that makes it worse.

I think I just ranted a bit, too.

Brave of you to take MT and her companions to the aquarium--that in and of itself is an undertaking!

You need a good cuppa coffee and some F&N maybe!

Yes. We saw Dolphins jumping for fish in a tank once long ago and it left a sour taste. I don't suppose the little fish need a lot of space to be comfortable but big fish like sharks surely need a few square miles in which to swim and establish territories at the very least.
And then one has to wonder about the enormous carbon footprint that surely must come of those lovely programmes about our wild life.
My half-sister wanted to be a doctor but her Mum and our Dad wouldn't let her take science Matriculation because they didn't think it suitable for a girl! Lucky Mini Teen to live now instead of then!

Oh, I do so agree. So does Horatio.

~sigh~
If she goes on this path, some day she will explain to you WHY we have these awful cages, bowls, boxes for our wildlife.
I honestly think that those in the profession realize that with out them, the animals themselves would be gone.
went to the Mote where they brought Thousands of sea life from the gulf, in an attempt to save it from BP and there Oil travesty. With the hope that some day BP would clean up their act and their mess, and they could release these poor folks back into their homes.
~sigh~
a pipe dream really, as BP and man in general shows no signs of repenting his self centered ways.
I don't like them, but I am grateful they are there, saving them from our folly...
