lucky scarab

small handsized scarabs abound in Egpyt they are reasuring to hold in your palmfour thousand years ago some talented Egyptians with a bigger vision carved a huge scarab out of red granite and set it atop a plinth, which, at then end of the C19th, some Europeans were photographed next to. . . and at the beginning of the C21st this European took a photo of the scrab, now atop its plinth at the Karnak Temple in Thebes, to share with youapparently, if you walk around it anti-clockwise it will bring you good luck. . . and, believe it or not, in the C21st you can actually find a YouTube video of people doing exactly that! (personally, I think this just a story that the guides tell the tourists so that the the tourists keep themselves busy walking round in circles while the guides have a quick break)

all in all, the number of tourists at the temples and tombs, the museums, the books, the study, the webpages, make me think that the Ancient Egyptians totally succeeded in their wish to live forever. . . in one sense of never being forgotten. . .

there's no time for us, there's no place for us
what is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away from us
who wants to live forever?

there's no chance for us, it's all decided for us
this world has only one sweet moment set aside for us
who wants to live forever? who dares to love forever?
when love must die

but touch my tears with your lips, touch my world with your fingertips
and we can have forever, and we can love forever, forever is our today
who wants to live forever, who wants to live forever? forever is our today

who wants forever anyway?

So.....inquiring minds wanna know. Did you walk around it seven times? Did you walk around it counterclockwise?

What an amazing, awe inspiring, humbling adventure. I hope you came back with a smidgeon of the 'centeredness' your photos have shifted me to.

And believe me when I say, I soooo needed centered.

Fascinating, thank you. I shall try this with every beetle I come across. Eccentric? Not any more.

It's nearly Friday.

Humming some tunes, and wondering why any one would want to be immortal..
and what magic properties bugs might really have...

Oh I so remember this!!!! After we'd been persuaded to walk round the scarab we were allowed to sit down and have a drink in the shade : )
Your photos and stories are reminding me of so much! I want to go back there and do it all again!
Did you bring home a scarab?

Oh, sorry - I will try not to keep saying I was there too, it's just so evocative!!!

mig I am so totally loving the fact that you were there too, and also that you actually walked around the scarab!! (I didn't - just annoyed all the people who were, by trying to get them to stand out of the way so I could take a photo!)

wouldn't it be great to go back and do it all again? I want to go back to Luxor and take a boat to Aswan and then take the train to Cairo and go to Giza

illuminary I like listening to your humming! magical bugs seem more interesting than immortality, don't they

X

Christopher good stuff, eh!

Mel I want you to take a moment and find that centeredness that comes from the wonders of Ancient Egypt, the clarity of the Red Sea, the patterns on the quilt barns, the twisting of the weather vanes, the flow of the river, the fluttering of the hummers, the rustling of the corn munchers. . .

. . .and pin it to yourself, so that you always have it when you need it
